South Baseball—The Spirit of Winning is the first major film to turn the spotlight on Toms River High School South and legendary Indians Baseball Head Coach, Ken Frank. Coach Frank not only is New Jersey’s winningest high school baseball coach, (ranked 15th nationally) he also is a dedicated mentor who has had a profound impact on the lives of countless players during the past 40+ years. The 2017 season was another winner, with the team clinching the Class A South title.
Twenty years after a 1998 Toms River team became Little League World Series Champions, the one-hour film highlights this area’s passion for baseball. The film traces Todd Frazier’s story – from starring on that Little League team, through successful seasons at High School South, Rutgers University, and as third baseman for the New York Yankees – and shows how this hometown hero serves as an inspiration to young players.
The film depicts former South Baseball players, many of whom regularly attend spirited games in Ken Frank Baseball Stadium, proudly watching their sons follow in their footsteps. It also includes interviews with sports insiders who share entertaining stories that gave rise to the legend of Coach Frank and Indians baseball. Interest in the film will extend beyond sports fans at the Jersey Shore, as the documentary shows how tough love can help young people win in sports and in life.
Veteran television journalist Sandra Levine, a Toms River native and South alumna who has been nominated 10 times for regional Emmy Awards, produced the film. In 2014 her poignant, one-hour documentary about Superstorm Sandy, Heartbreak & Healing After Sandy, premiered at the Grunin Center, and aired on public television stations (PBS) throughout New Jersey and in parts of the surrounding states.

Dino Ossola, a small-time real estate agent who dreams of bigger things; Serena Ossola, his teenage daughter who dates a spoiled rich brat; Carla Bruneschi, an actress who has given up her career to marry a wealthy businessman; Massimiliano Giovanni Bernaschi, her husband, a powerful player; Massimiliano Bernaschi, the troubled son of the Bernaschis; Roberta Ossola, a psychologist, Dino’s second wife; Donato Russomano, a brilliant drama teacher who is stuck on Carla; Luca Ambrosini, a teenager frowned upon by others; an anonymous cyclist… They are all shareholders of the human capital.
Rodriguez, the legendary singer-songwriter known only by his surname, is a self-taught guitarist. He began performing in bars and clubs around the city of Detroit in the 1960s, as the city suffered postindustrial urban decay. It was there that he recorded two studio albums, Cold Fact in 1969 and Coming from Reality in 1971 released on Sussex records. These recordings went unnoticed in the U.S. and Rodriguez eventually turned his efforts elsewhere, earning a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Wayne State University, running for political office and working construction and factory jobs to support his family.

In April 2018 Berlin-based Max Raabe & Palast Orchester will be crossing the Atlantic with their critically acclaimed show “Let’s Do It”. It may seem fresh that a German band tours the home territory of the American Songbook with a program stacked with standards like “Stormy Weather”, “Over My Shoulder” or “Who´s Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolf”, but Max Raabe & Palast Orchester have their own charming way of interpreting the original arrangements. They take a classical approach, put thought into every musical phrase and then let the music flow. A wonderful contrast to these melodies well known to American and Canadian audiences are the German counterparts written in the late 20s. Hilarious songs like “When I need love, I go to Pauline”, romances like “Women are so beautiful when they love” and classics like Kurt Weill´s “Bilbao Song” are cleverly woven into a highly entertaining evening that builds bridges over time and space.
