Who wants to volunteer?  It’s time for Clean Ocean Action’s Fall Beach Sweeps along the Jersey Shore!

The Monmouth and Ocean County efforts will be getting some extra help from Jersey Central Power & Light.  JCP&L is serving as site sponsor for cleanup work that will be done October 21st at beaches in Asbury Park, Belmar and Point Pleasant.

This is one of the longest-running beach cleanups of its kind in the world.  Clean Ocean Action launched the Beach Sweeps program in 1985 to rid beaches of harmful debris.  Each year, volunteers clean beaches in New Jersey from the Raritan to Delaware Bays.

Throughout the life of the program more than 115,000 volunteers have participated, removing close to 6-million pieces of debris from New Jersey’s beaches and waterways.

“JCP&L’s service area is home to miles and miles of picturesque beaches across portions of Monmouth and Ocean counties,” said Jim Fakult, president of JCP&L.  “Sponsoring Beach Sweeps shows our commitment to the environment by preserving a key natural resource, protecting fish and wildlife and promoting tourism and the coastal economy.”

Volunteers of all ages are welcome to participate.  Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.  Volunteers should bring garden or latex gloves and wear hard-soled shoes.

Those interested in volunteering at the JCP&L-sponsored Beach Sweep events should meet at the following locations at 9:00 a.m. on October 21st:

  • Asbury Park – Convention Hall, 1300 Ocean Avenue
  • Belmar – Third Avenue Beach, Third Avenue & Boardwalk
  • Point Pleasant – Jenkinson’s Beach, 300 Ocean Avenue, Point Pleasant Beach
