Phoenix Productions Presents: 1776 @ Count Basie Theatre

1776 will remind us all of the world our forefathers envisioned when they created this nation. With music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards and a book by Peter Stone, 1776 is a compelling story breathing fresh life into the events surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The story follows historical figures John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson as they attempt to convince the members of the Second Continental Congress to vote for independence from the shackles of the British monarchy by signing the Declaration of Independence. 1776 is an entertaining and educational experience for the whole family!

Phoenix Productions Presents: The Hunchback of Notre Dame @ Count Basie Theatre
Nov 9 – Nov 14 all-day
Phoenix Productions Presents: The Hunchback of Notre Dame @ Count Basie Theatre

Based on the Victor Hugo novel (author of Les Miserables) and songs from the Disney animated feature, The Hunchback of Notre Dame showcases the film’s Academy Award – nominated score, as well as new songs by Menken and Schwartz. Peter Parnell’s new book embraces story theatre and features verbatim passages from Hugo’s Gothic novel. The musical begins as the bells of Notre dame sound through the famed cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer who longs to be “Out There”, observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools. Held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, he escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful gypsy, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though – the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies – and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all.

Legally Blonde @ Count Basie Center for the Arts
Feb 21 @ 8:00 pm – 10:30 pm

OMG you guys!!! Legally Blonde – The Musical is coming to the Basie!

Fabulously fun and international award-winning Legally Blonde – The Musical is the ultimate Broadway tribute to Girl Power! The story follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, sexism, snobbery and scandal in pursuit of her dreams, and proves that you can be legally blonde and STILL the smartest person in the room. This contemporary, sassy musical moves at a breakneck pace driven by memorable songs and explosive dances. Legally Blonde – The Musical warms the heart by proving that self-discovery can be way too much fun and hilarious to boot.

Elle Woods appears to have it all. Her life is turned upside down, however, when her boyfriend dumps her so he can start getting more serious about his life and attend Harvard Law. Determined to get him back, Elle uses her ingenuity and charm to get into Harvard too. School begins with endless struggles, but with the help of her new friends, Elle quickly realizes her potential, and her true assets, as she sets out to prove herself to the world and make everyone a believer.

Based on the beloved movie, Legally Blonde – The Musical will take you from the sorority house to the halls of justice with Broadway’s brightest new heroine and, of course, her Chihuahua, Bruiser.

CHEAP TRICK: Robin Zander (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick Nielsen (lead guitar) and Tom Petersson (bass guitar) are part of the very fiber of American music, inspiring and delighting generations with their unique union of massive melodies and razor blade riffs, their own special brand of mischievous wit and maximum rock ‘n’ roll. With timeless classics such as “I Want You to Want Me” and “Surrender,” CHEAP TRICK, now with drummer Daxx Nielsen, are a musical institution. The Rockford, IL band is as vital today as ever, having released three records in the last three years — BANG ZOOM CRAZY…HELLO (2016), WE’RE ALL ALRIGHT (2017and CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS (2017) –and toured relentlessly to packed audiences around the world. 2016 saw CHEAP TRICK’s long-awaited induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Monkees @ Count Basie Center for the Arts
Mar 5 @ 8:00 pm

Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz of The Monkees will hit the road for their first-ever national tour as a duo. Billed as “The Monkees Present: The Mike & Micky Show,” these 16 special performances will feature songs that span the group’s entire career – from its 1966 eponymous debut to 2016’s Good Times. The shows will highlight many of Nesmith’s compositions, including some that have never been performed live. The tour also includes two shows in Canada, which represent Nesmith’s first “Monkees” concerts since the band played there in 1969.

“I love being on stage with Micky,” says Nesmith. “We’ve been collaborating for over 50 years, so it’s hard to believe it’s never been just the two of us. I’m excited to dust off some tunes that I haven’t played for a long time too. These are going to be some fun shows.”

“Right from the get-go, I admired Mike’s songs. When we used to get together around the campfire to sing in the early days, we were always doing his songs,” says Dolenz. “We always had such a great a vocal blend; he was the one who encouraged me to write songs of my own. I’ve always been a big fan and now we finally get to do the Mike & Micky show that we riffed on back when we were shooting The Monkees.”

“The Monkees Present: The Mike & Micky Show” is the latest chapter in Monkee-mania, a saga that began in 1965 when four young men were cast in a television show about a struggling rock band that was inspired by the Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night. Few could have predicted the impact the Monkees would have on music and pop culture at large, one that still reverberates more than 50 years later.

Bob Weir and Wolf Bros @ Count Basie Center for the Arts
Mar 13 @ 8:00 pm – 10:30 pm

Grateful Dead/Dead & Company guitarist Bob Weir, bassist Don Was and drummer Jay Lane under the moniker Bob Weir and Wolf Bros will explore songs of the Grateful Dead and more in a trio setting.

Bob Weir is one of the founding members of the legendary Grateful Dead, which received a GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. The band has also appeared on Forbes’ list of top-grossing entertainers and in the early ‘90s were the highest-grossing concert attraction in the U.S. Since establishing the band in 1965, Weir has become one of rock’s finest and most distinctive rhythm guitarists. He is currently a member of Dead & Company which features Grateful Dead members Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann along with GRAMMY-winner John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti.

Jay Lane is a founding member of Weir’s longtime band RatDog. The drummer also toured with Furthur for a brief stint and performed with Bobby and Rob Wasserman as part of Scaring The Children. Was introduced Weir and Mickey Hart to John Mayer, which eventually led to the formation of Dead & Company.

“Wolf Bros is something that really took its roots back in the spring of 2015 when Don Was came up to TRI and helped us piece together Dead & Company,” Bob Weir said of the new project in a statement. “For a while now I’ve been itchin’ to explore our songs in a trio setting. An upright bass, my acoustic or electric guitar and a drummer. We did some rehearsals this past spring and it was big fun—and that’s the whole idea. We were kickin’ around Dead songs as well as tunes from my back pages. I’m pretty sure we’re gonna have a big adventure with this…”
